Description
Vernon Kilns 1st Edition Baker's Chocolate 175th Anniversary Plate, Dorchester, MAThis lovely plate blue and white plate was produced to commemorate the 175th Anniversary of the founding of Baker's Chocolate.
The company that became Baker's Chocolate began production in 1765 in a sawmill in Milton, MA. In 1775 the business moved across the river to Dorchester, which was a village that eventually became a neighborhood of Boston. This was going on during the American Revolution! Clearly there is always a need and time for chocolate.
The back of the plate shows "La Belle Chocolatiere" (the beautiful chocolate maker) Reg. U.S. Pat. Off., the Baker's Chocolate Logo. The text says, in modern English:
Fashioned by skilled Artisans to mark the 175th Anniversary of Walter Baker & Company, Incorporated., this Server depicts the Village of Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony (circa 1775) and the Mill located there in which James Baker and John Hannon manufactured the first Chocolate in America - 1765.
Shown, too, is the Fortification of Dorchester Heights against the blockading British Fleets; the first free Publick School (in which James Baker taught) and the Church in which he worshipped.
First Edition - 1940
Also on the back:
Vernon Kilns
Made in U.S.A.
Pat. Pend. S. E. C.
and a logo in a circle that I can't decipher.
Vernon Kilns was an American ceramic company located in Vernon, California (Los Angeles County). In 1931, Faye Bennison purchased the former Poxon China pottery and renamed it Vernon Kilns. Vernon produced ceramic tableware, art ware, giftware, and figurines. The company closed its doors in 1958. Vernon Kilns became one of the "Big Five" California potteries. It
produced transfer-print specialty ware that could be special ordered. Custom decal plates, as special-order items, were produced for department stores, promotional advertisement, commemorative events, and the tourist trade.
From a smoke-free home. Maltipoo does not eat off of the China. He is very disappointed.
